Overview
This half-day tour is for travelers who want to explore Egypt's past in comfort. A private transfer takes you from your hotel or cruise ship to Kalabsha Temple in a modern air-conditioned vehicle, with an Egyptologist as your guide.
The guide tells the story of how the temple was rebuilt. It first stood at another site. Construction of the High Dam forced the move, and the temple was taken apart in about 13,000 blocks and reassembled at its present spot by the lake. That rescue kept its reliefs, carvings, and religious heritage from being lost under water.
Inside, the reliefs honor the Egyptian god Horus and the Nubian god Mandulis. Traces of Christian use remain too, including Coptic crosses and a carving of St. George in the inner rooms. Some puzzles are still debated by Egyptologists, such as the inscriptions in Meroitic, a language scholars only partly understand.
You see the lake from the temple grounds, walk through the wide courtyard, and hear each story on site. Kalabsha is a symbol of Nubian culture that has survived into the present day.
The temple lies about 50 kilometers south of Aswan. It dates to the early Roman period and shows how Egyptian and Nubian traditions blended. Carvings inside show scenes from Egyptian myth and daily life, with deities such as Isis, Osiris, and Horus.
